Disabled Veterans Remodeling

If you are a disabled veteran, did you know you could qualify for a Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant to remodel your home so that it better meets your needs and live more independently? Wheelchair accessible bathrooms with a roll-in shower and grab bars, wider doorways, access ramps and more might be possible.

What Can the SAH Grant Cover?

According to VA.gov, one or more of the following home remodeling projects may be covered:

  • Bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms

  • Covered porches, ramps, and walkways

  • Garages, carports, and passageways

  • Doors, windows, and flooring

  • Security items

  • Concrete or asphalt walkways

  • Sliding doors, handrails, and grab bars

  • Additional elements as per the VA

Who Qualifies?

According to VA.gov’s most recent qualifications, both of these must be true:

  • You own or will own the home, and

  • You have a qualifying service-connected disability

Qualifying service-connected disabilities include, but not limited to:

  • The loss or loss of use of more than one limb

  • The loss or loss of use of a lower leg along with the residuals (lasting effects) of an organic (natural) disease or injury

  • Blindness in both eyes (with 20/200 visual acuity or less)

  • Certain severe burns

  • The loss, or loss of use, of one lower extremity (foot or leg) after September 11, 2001, which makes it so you can’t balance or walk without the help of braces, crutches, canes, or a wheelchair
