Adding or Updating A Deck: Expanding Your Living Space Outside

Adding a deck has always been one of the most requested home projects, but with the current situation, it makes more sense than ever. Expanding your living space to include an outdoor sanctuary may be just the thing to help you get some fresh air and a little more room for your family.

Deck Purpose

Most people are looking for a deck that meets several needs: eating, cooking, and just enjoying the back yard. Others are looking for a whole new experience with a hot tub, a fireplace, an outdoor kitchen, a water feature, or even an outdoor TV.

Deck Location and Access

Most homeowners want their decks located as closely to the kitchen as possible, especially if they plan to eat outdoors frequently. If you already have a door leading out to where you would like your deck to be, your costs will be much less than having to add another opening.

Style and Materials

Consider the existing style of your home when designing a deck. It should blend in or at least complement the house. Decks can be made of wood or composites, but composites are recommended more widely due to their durability. Engineered with a mixture of wood fibers and plastic, composite boards now look more realistic than they used to and are offered in multiple colors. Many wood plank types may be less expensive, but they can rot, warp, crack and splinter if not properly maintained.

Deck Coverings

Because you may not use your deck when it is too sunny or raining, you may want to consider some type of covering. Whether it’s a large umbrella, a retractable awning or a permanent roof, a covering will give you more opportunities to enjoy your new day.

Lighting

Like a deck covering, lighting can also be added to extend the time spent on your deck. You may consider ambient lighting, a brighter light for the grill area, a lit stairwell or more lighting to truly enhance your new outdoor living space.

Permitting and Codes

Most decks projects will require a permit. It is important to work with a reputable contractor to ensure you are meeting all building and safety codes since every town has different guidelines.

The Best Time to Build A Deck

Depending on the size of the deck, most take about 2 weeks to build (unless it is a very large or complex project). Spring, summer or fall are all favorable times for building out your new outdoor living space.
